Preventive Diesel Fleet Maintenance Key to Engine Longevity

WHY SHOULD YOU CARE ABOUT PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE?

Quite Simply – cost. Many studies have shown that regular preventive maintenance of your diesel fleet assets will give them a longer live span. Replacing your fleet of trucks or diesel equipment every 10 years rather than every 8 will put money in your pocket.

Have You Checked Your Oil Supply For Your Diesel Turbocharger Lately?

There are many little things that you can do to make your turbocharger last longer.  One of the simplest things to do for preventive maintenance is to check your oil and fluid levels. If the supply is not sufficient to properly lubricate the system, a lot of bad things can happen.  At Western Turbo, we see many damaged turbochargers due to insufficient oil supply.

Here are some attributes that lead to damage due to insufficient oil supply;

  • Re-fitting a turbocharger without adequate priming
  • Long periods of non-use
  • Broken or restricted oil feed pipe
  • Low engine oil pressure due to malfunctioning lubrication system
  • Low or no oil in sump
  • The use of sealants, which can restrict the oil flow
  • Not priming a replacement oil filter with new oil.  If this cannot be done, then crank the engine with no fuel to establish oil pressure.
  • Do not exceed idle conditions until oil pressure is established

Regular maintenance by Winnipeg’s largest diesel service centre should ensure that your diesel turbo charger is in top working order.   Western Turbo can set you up on a preventive maintenance program for your individual diesel or fleet requirements.  Whether you are in Winnipeg, or rural Manitoba, give us a call for you next service.

2016 Colorado 2.8L Duramax® Turbo-Diesel

The Chevy Colorado was named the Motor Trend Truck of the Year® for 2015. Fast forward a year later, and reminiscent of Groundhog Day, the 2016 Chevy Colorado has once again earned the award, but this year there’s a diesel twist.

The 2016 midsize truck model is available with a 181-horsepower, 2.8-litre inline-four Duramax diesel, making it the only truck in its class (along with the GMC Canyon cousin) to offer such an engine.

Some other reasons cited by reviewers for the back-to-back victories include capability, dynamic performance, and overall driver enjoyment. The truck is engineered to drive small and light, feeling more like a crossover than a truck, and resulting in unusually sharp steering and deft handling.

The Duramax 2.8L Turbo-Diesel engine provides an impressive 181 horsepower. It also offers torque of 369lb/ft, towing capacity of 7,700lbs, and fuel economy of 22 city/31 highway; each rating representing the Best-In-Class.

The cabin of the Duramax is very quiet thanks to added acoustic damping in the dash and engine cover, and a trick piece of engineering that cancels out the engine’s torsional vibrations.

Dubbed “immensely versatile”, the new Duramax delivers best-in-class fuel economy, superb drivability, and superior towing and payload capacity. Definitely worthy of the Motor Trend truck of the Year® title two years running!

The Joy of Driving A Recreational Vehicle

There’s a certain joy in getting away from home. When you choose an RV vacation, you can escape but take all the comforts of home with you. Thanks to several decades of evolution in materials and technology, today’s recreational vehicles (motorhomes and towables) offer a very high level of comfort while maintaining fuel efficiency and drivability that was unheard of in the past.

You don’t need a special license to drive most RVs or tow most trailers in Canada. If you’re an experienced driver, you should have no trouble picking up the skills required to take your vacation on the road. Here are some tips to help you get ready:

  1. Practice before you hit the highway. Because your RV or tow vehicle/trailer combination is bigger than you are used to, it can take a little bit to adapt to the larger turning radius and increased acceleration time and stopping distance. It’s better to test your skills and equipment out close to home, where you can easily return and make adjustments if you need.
  2. Make sure your equipment is in top shape before you take to the road. RVs and trailers have some specific maintenance needs – bearings need to be greased, propane systems need to be purged, etc.  Because you’ll be burning more fuel than a regular passenger vehicle, your pollution footprint will be bigger, too.  Take your vehicle for service to save money and the environment.
  3. When you’re planning your vacation, book as many campgrounds as you can ahead of time. Make sure you’re selecting a site that matches the type of equipment that you have.
  4. Remember – safety first. Many people schedule hectic drives between campgrounds on their vacation. Remember, the RV experience is as much about the journey as it is the destination. Stay safe, relax, and use the time to stay out of the rat race.

IamDiesel at Western Turbo and Fuel Injection has the knowledge and equipment necessary to help prepare your diesel RV or tow vehicle for the road this summer. Visit us at our clean, modern facility at 325 Eagle Drive in Winnipeg.

OilCheckUp

How much money could you save in maintenance costs if you could take the guesswork out of determining the condition of petroleum based fluids? Thousands of dollars are lost, annually from component failure, much of which is linked directly to inadequate lubrication from broken-down petroleum based fluids; still more revenue is wasted by performing unnecessary maintenance. With labour and fluid prices at an all-time high, optimizing the effectiveness of your preventative maintenance program is a necessity, whether you are responsible for one vehicle or one thousand.

Now, you can effectively test the viscosity and condition of petroleum based fluids in all of your cars, trucks, boats, and equipment, while checking for the presence of contaminants, in just one easy step. The Western Turbo OilCheckUp Analysis tool will enable you to test a single drop of engine oil, transmission fluid, power steering fluid, or gear-lube for condition, viscosity, the presence and degree of sediment and grime, the presence and degree of water or antifreeze, and the degree of saturation from fuel deposits. By dispensing one drop of any petroleum based lubricant onto the special chromatographic test medium you can determine whether or not your vehicle’s vital fluids have reached theirs effective limit, before it is too late.

Using the economical OilCheckUp analysis kit, you can instantly determine the condition of vitally important fluids. After dispensing a single drop of petroleum based fluid onto the test medium, simply compare the pattern on the chromatographic test medium to the reference card (included with the kit). Within five-minutes you will be able to determine if your engine oil needs to be replaced due to excessive sediment and grime from overuse. You will also know if your engine oil is contaminated with antifreeze or water. Blown head gaskets, compromised intake passages, and cracked cylinder blocks/heads can allow antifreeze and water to seep into your engine’s crankcase diminishing your oil’s viscosity and resulting in destruction of engine components. Fuel saturation from leaky injectors or a rich air/fuel mixture can also ruin your oil’s viscosity; test your engine oil now, before it is too late.

The results of the test are easy to decipher, just see for yourself:

Greater Value with Diesels

With all of the recent buzz about hybrids and electric vehicles, be careful not to overlook the comeback of the diesel. Diesel powered coupes and sedans took a long hiatus, but they are back and they have undergone drastic developments. The introduction of ultra-low sulfur clean diesel fuels, more efficient turbochargers and intercoolers, and direct fuel injection has yielded the automotive industry a viable ally in the fight for fuel conservation.

Despite the added initial cost of some diesel cars, most are economically sensible. The EPA estimated average improvement in fuel mileage, over their gasoline powered counterparts, is approximately thirty-percent, but that is assuming that only forty-five percent of the miles are driven on the highway. If you live and work near the highway, depending upon the length of you commute, you are likely to drive a greater percentage of highway miles, thus you should see improvements in that estimate; making the diesel option an even greater idea.

In addition to the fuel savings, the resale value of the typical diesel powered car is greater than either the hybrid, electric, or gasoline powered version of the same model. Statistically, diesel powered cars are five-percent more valuable than gasoline powered models when it is time to resell them.

When it comes to the hybrid and electric models; diesel wins hands down.
• Diesel fuel is available nearly anywhere.
• Diesel powered vehicles are capable of travelling long distances (without a recharge).
• Modern turbocharged diesel cars have the edge in performance over hybrid cars.
